The Prabhupāda & Gaudiya Guru-varga

The history of Gaudiya Mission - London

The Gaudiya Mission is a movement for disseminating Gaudiya Vaishnavism, that is, Sri Chaitanya's teachings of pure love of God, founded by Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Prabhupad in 1918 in Kolkata, India. These teachings originated in Bengal, India, but Prabhupad's vision was to spread them not only throughout India but throughout the whole world, as he was convinced of their value for all of humankind. Prabhupada spent his whole life (1874-1937) pursuing this task, in which he was assisted by many qualified students in establishing 66 maths and preaching centers around the world. In April 1933, Prabhupada sent three of these students to the West: Swami Bhakti Hridoy Bon Maharaj (1901-1982), Swami Bhakti PradipTirtha Maharaj (1877-1954), and Sri Sambidananda Dasa (1904-1983).

These three intrepid pioneers founded the Gaudiya Mission - London society with the Marquess of Zetland as its first president. A temporary headquarters was set up at Greyton Garden, Kensington, London, before moving to Gloucester House in nearby Cornwall Gardens. Several educated English adopted the philosophy as illustrated by the saints from 1934 onwards. Swami Bon met King George V on July 20,1933, and he and Swami Bhakti Pradip Tirtha Maharaj lectured extensively, securing the goodwill of many of the leading British politicians, intellectuals, and religionists of the time, such as Viscount Halifax (who had been viceroy of India just a few years earlier) and the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Sri Vasudev Gaudiya Math, London

“Just as externally the Gaudiya Matha has erected a great palace, multiple books must be written and published to establish internal Hari-bhajana in this world. A temple and kirtana hall for cultivation of transcendental kirtana, fashioned in the form of grantha-bhagavata (Srimad-Bhagavatam) and bhakta-bhagavatas (pure devotees), are more important than a temple built with bricks and stones, because by creating the former kind of Hari-katha can be broadcast much farther on this plane. Now we have founded a scat. Notwithstanding spent one man’s entire life’s earnings to build a fort for propagating bhagavat-katha, even so, only if herein we protect ourselves from the association of materialists and the tumultuous welter of Kali-yuga will Hari-katha be preached from this place. Only by building ideal lives and a mansion of books can the message of bhagavad-bhakti remain permanently in this sphere.

ISKCON Prabhupāda

Here are some references from Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta ISKCON edition about some disrespectful remarks that were published under the signature of Śrīla Svami Mahārāja (who used to be called Prabhupāda by his own followers) about Gauḍīya Maṭha and our Sarasvat Gauḍīya guru-varga:

dhānya-rāśi māpe yaiche pātnā sahite

paścāte pātnā uḍāñā saṁskāra karate   C.c. Ādi 12.12

Paddy is mixed with straw at first, and one must fan it to separate the paddy from the straw.

“This example given by Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja Gosvāmī is very appropriate. In the case of the Gauḍīya Maṭha members, one can apply a similar process. There are many disciples of Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura, but to judge who is actually his disciple, to divide the useful from the useless, one must measure the activities of such disciples in executing the will of the spiritual master. Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura tried his best to spread the cult of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu to countries outside India. When he was present, he patronized the disciples to go outside India to preach the cult of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, but they were unsuccessful because within their minds they were not actually serious about preaching His cult in foreign countries; they simply wanted to take credit for having gone to foreign lands and utilize this recognition in India by advertising themselves as repatriated preachers. Many svāmīs have adopted this hypocritical means of preaching for the last eighty years or more, but no one could preach the real cult of Kṛṣṇa consciousness all over the world. They merely came back to India falsely advertising that they had converted all the foreigners to the ideas of Vedānta or Kṛṣṇa consciousness, and then they collected funds in India and lived satisfied lives of material comfort. As one fans paddy to separate the real paddy from useless straw, by accepting the criterion recommended by Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja Gosvāmī one can very easily understand who is a genuine world-preacher and who is useless.

In this next letter excerpts, published under the name of Śrīla Svami Mahārāja, who used to be intentionally addressed as Prabhupada by his followers, we can read an unexplainable mood:

THIS IS MY INSTRUCTION TO YOU ALL

Śrīla Prabhupāda’s Letter to Rupanuga 4/28/74:

“In the latter days of my Guru Mahārāja he was very disgusted. Actually, he left this world earlier, otherwise he would have continued to live for more years. Still, he requested his disciples to form a strong Governing body for preaching the cult of Caitanya Mahāprabhu. He never recommended anyone to be ācārya of the Gauḍīya Maṭha. But Srila Bhakti Rakshak Śrīdhara Mahārāja is responsible for disobeying this order of Guru Mahārāja, and he and others who are already dead unnecessarily thought that there must be one ācārya. If Guru Mahārāja could have seen someone who was qualified at that time to be ācārya he would have mentioned. Because on the night before he passed away, he talked of so many things, but never mentioned an ācārya. His idea was talked of so many things, but never mentioned an ācārya. His idea was, ācārya was not to be nominated amongst the governing body. He said openly you make a GBC and conduct the mission. So, his idea was amongst the members of GBC who would come out successful and self-effulgent ācārya would be automatically selected. So Śrīdhara Mahārāja and his two associate gentlemen unauthorizedly selected one ācārya and later it proved a failure. The result is now everyone is claiming to be ācārya even though they may be kaniṣṭhā adhikārī with no ability to preach. In some of the camps the ācārya is being changed three times a year. Therefore, we may not commit the same mistake in our ISKCON camp. Actually, amongst my Godbrothers no one is qualified to become ācārya. So, it is better not to mix with my Godbrothers very intimately because instead of inspiring our students and disciples they may sometimes pollute them. This attempt was made previously by them, especially Madhava Mahārāja and Tirtha Mahārāja and Bon Mahārāja but somehow or other I saved the situation. This is going on. We shall be very careful about them and not mix with them. This is my instruction to you all. They cannot help us in our movement, but they are very competent to harm our natural progress. So, we must be very careful about them.

THEIR PROPOSAL FOR COOPERATION IS A MYTH

Śrīla Prabhupāda’s Letter to ACUTANANDA 6/8/74:

You should not write anything to Madhava Mahārāja’s camp. You may have talked many things with Mangala Niloy but why write him in black and white. The letter must not be sent. Their policy has been all along to suppress me and take credit for himself. Their proposal for cooperation is a myth. They haven’t done anything which is cooperative. You know in a recent article they managed to write in such a way that Madhava is doing the world movement and we are his subordinate. From the beginning that has been their mentality. So, there is no possibility of cooperation with them. Rather you should avoid strictly meeting with them. They are not after preaching but material gain and reputation and adoration. Otherwise, why they are non-cooperating with me? So, no cooperation is possible. Do not think or indulge in loose talks. Be careful always. Let us do the duty of propagation sincerely and seriously on our own principles. Kṛṣṇa and Śrīla Prabhupāda Bhakti Siddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura are our only hope and they and helping us. If anything has to be done it is to be talked on the higher level between Madhava Mahārāja and myself, but I know his mentality is different and there is no possibility of cooperation.”

Śrī Śhyām Das Bābā

(A wide acclimation was given to the representative of Sri Gaudiya Math (Srila Bhakti Saranga Gosvami Prabhu) for preaching Sanatan Dharma shiksa in Western countries as was represented by Sriman Mahaprabhu Himself.)

Srila Bhakti Saranga Gosvami Prabhu came back from his foreign preaching trip with the self-manifested deity ‘Vasudeva Vigraha’ (which was found at London). At that time the in charge of Sri Cahitanya Math, the chairman of the Governing body and the general superintendent of Gaudiya Mission Srila Vinod Bihari Brahmachari Kriti Ratna Prabhu together with other members of the society (Sri Gaudiya Mission) and those common people from different places, especially from Calcutta they all provided a warm welcome  to him. Honoured followed by a big procession of Sankirtan party he arrived at Sri Gaudiya Math at Calcutta Bhag Bazar, and in the evening six o’clock all the admirers of Gosvamiji from Calcutta and outside and together with all the sevaks of Sri Gaudiya Math provided a big heartfelt congratulation to him in the open assembly which was presided over by Sri Yukta Herendranath Datta – Vedanta Ratna Mahashay for his excellent preaching of Sri Gaura Vani in the Western countries.

Some very very important remarkable places where he delivered his lectures are given below for your kind information, so that you can realise from heart about who can be the genuine representative of Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami Thakur Prabhupada Paramahamsa Jagad Guru (Gaudiya Gosthi Pati) or Sri Gaudiaya Mission started by him.

He was selected as the only representative on behalf of Sri Sanantan Dharma (or Sri Gaudiya Mission) in the assembly of “World congress of faith” or the world wide great assembly of Dharma. He provided a precious firing lecture at Oxford town hall in the great assembly, which was presided over by Lord Shyamual on the topic of—“World’s need religion”. Also he has done the same ( given a precious firing lecture) in the great assembly of—“World fellow ship of faith” as the representative of Sanatan Dharma at London. Also the same he has done at Caxton Hall London on the topic of “Divine love” under the president ship of Sri Francis Young Hugbrand, and again he was successful to provide an excellent scientific lecture on the topic of “Devotion to God” under the president ship of the secretary of India Lord Zetland at London, which all has brought about a great evolution in the History of England. He also provided a unique and unparalleled lecture on the topic of “Sri Krsna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and His precepts (siddhanta vichars)” in front of the Queen of England and the mother of the King of England at Buckingham palace at London.

So in infinite period we can never pay to Sri Apprakrita Bhakti Saranga Gosvami Prabhu for the kind of excellent and unique task of preaching the Gaura Vani on behalf of Sri Gaudiya Mission as per the direct order of Srila Prabhupada Bhakti Siddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami Thakur, who himself told him as good as me. Who can dare to criticise him accept a foolish!
